PECO’s vast knowledge of Electrostatic Precipitators also extends to inspection services. A typical PECO ESP Inspection recommends a brief internal inspection be performed with the ESP in the dirty state, prior to grit blasting or water washing. An internal inspection of the ESP in the dirty state will provide clues to the operational effectiveness of the Unit as well as gas flow and rapping characteristics. The dirty inspection typically requires less than 1 day depending on the size of the unit. After the ESP cleaning (grit blasting or water washing are both acceptable ways to clean the precipitator prior to clean inspection), a comprehensive internal inspection with the ESP in the clean state is performed to determine the condition of all internal components, including welds, stress areas, all connections, and structural components. The clean inspection typically entails an additional 2 days on site depending on the size of the unit. The time between the dirty and clean inspection is typically spent on evaluating the rappers, checking the purge air system, penthouse or insulator compartments, roofs, and all external portions of the ESP. A typical ESP Inspection includes 2 engineers being on site a total 3-4 days.

Following is a description of the services offered in our standard precipitator inspection. Our precipitator inspections would typically cover a detailed visual check of the following items:

• Discharge Electrodes & D.E. Alignment/Spacing System
• Collecting Electrodes & C.E. Alignment/Spacing System
• Collector Rapping Anvils • Upper and Lower HV Steadying Frames
• Plate to Electrode Clearances • Support Insulators & Compartments
• Rapper Shaft Components & Seals • Slide Plates and Support Structure
• Purge Air System • Control Cabinets
• Anti-Sway Insulators • T/R’s, Enclosures, & Bus Pipe
• Casing & Baffles • Gas Distribution Systems
• Hoppers • Access Doors & Interlocks
• Inlet/Outlet Plenums and Expansion Joints

Upon the initial review of the unit, each inspection is tailored to concentrate on areas of the greatest concern. A brief, handwritten field report will be submitted at the end of the inspection and progress will be reviewed daily with plant personnel before our inspector(s) leave the site. A formal, detailed report follows within two to three weeks after the inspection. This report includes a written section specifying our inspection findings, repairs completed, cell diagrams, and photographs, as well as PECO's recommendations for future repairs, problem prevention, and potential system upgrades to improve operation.
